Dear friends,
Last week, we planned a civic roundtable discussion that would unite city leaders, law enforcement, and LGBTQ citizens in a conversation on best practices for safety. Many of you wrote in with suggestions or expressing interest in the event.
At the request of many of our community members and LGBTQ activists in the city, we are postponing our discussion in favor of an open-house style "drop-in" event where LGBTQ people can come to share their experiences with safety in New Haven, and their requests or needs for further action.
This change of format will ensure that the voices of LGBTQ citizens who have been impacted by safety concerns will be treated with the utmost respect. In addition, it acknowledges the hard work of the New Haven police department, and their willingness to come to the table to ensure safety for all.
If you are LGBTQ and would like to share your experiences, concerns, or ideas for this ongoing conversation on community safety, please join me at an LGBTQ-only drop-in session at the Yale LGBTQ Resource Center at 40a Ashmun St. This is an opportunity for us to exchange stories and develop a structure for our future work. Once we have reached a concensus on the most important issues, we will host our planned public forum and announce our next steps for this important initiative.
Thank you - hope to see you tomorrow!
